A Mason’s Ironstone China Soup Tureen

Ref: B453xx
Date: 1850
Quantity: 1
Dimensions: various
Price: $475

A highly decorated Mason’s (Francis Morley) heavy ironstone soup tureen and lid. An unusual piece made in a square form and decorated in the Imari manner with an exotic flower bud finial on the lid. It measures 9.5″ square, 10.5″ high and 12.5″ across the handles. It shows a crown and banner mark (Godden #2529) and a pattern number 2264 in gold. This mark is from the Francis Morley period circa 1850. There is a 3″ hairline crack in lid running from ladle opening, otherwise it is in good condition. (I have to say however that I think the handle or handles have been professionally restored. They look too good. The design of the handles has an inherent flaw. They suffer from too much leverage stress from the very heavy tureen and heavy lid, even when empty. I have only ever seen one similar piece many years ago, no handles, and the owner then described the problem). However this is a rare and unusual piece, a classic for any ironstone collection.
